Distant camera

With the “likes” of social media these days, everybody likes to be liked. But this wasn’t the case for American nanny, Vivian Maier. A self taught photographer, she hid behind her rolleiflex camera, documenting the world around her. Shooting over the course of 50 years, no one had seen her work….until now. In 2007, loaded with over 100,00 negatives, John Maloof won a container at auction. No one knew he was about to discover one of the greatest street photographers of our time.

A very private woman, she never showed anyone her photographs. Not even the families that she nannied for.

She may have documented everything around her like we do today, but unlike us, she never showed anyone her photographs. The greatest majority of her work she didn’t even get to see herself….but I did. Seeing her work, at the Centre for Contemporary Photography as part of the Melbourne Festival, blew me away. Maier had such an artistic eye for composition and light. The honesty of her photo’s allow you to step into the picture and I can tell you there’s no instagram filter that allows you to feel that.  She may have not wanted us to see her work, but we cannot turn a blind eye to such a great talent.  It was such a thrill for me to see traditional photography be so embraced in this current digital world.

No sleep ’til…

I love Brooklyn and I’m a sucker for anything with the word Brooklyn on it.  Especially from the clothing brand BWGH because they “go hard!”  And they also parle francais!

Song to the Sirèn

She’s blonde, sensual, passionate, French/Belgian background, (born and bred in Melbourne) and she’s a beer!

Is this not your perfect girl?

_DZK0180a

Just like the enchanting mermaid La Sirèné, this beer will seduce you. Like the colour of her flowing hair, this bottle is filled with liquid gold, beautiful, smooth and she will keep you wanting more. Do your taste buds hear her seducing call, Sailor?

You too will fall under the La Sirèné spell.

Last week, I was one of the lucky few to dine at the private dining room of St Crispin for the La Sirèné showcase over a 5 course Beer Degustation. The intimate event was hosted by the head brewer and owner, Costa Nikias, who guided us through a delectable dinner with matching beers from the local artisanal brewery.

We were presented with a menu especially designed for for this one off event. Delicious food, fabulous friends and fantastic beer! A wonderful night had by all. Definitely worth having a few beers on a Monday, even though it was a school night.  As my date put it, “fancy food and beer…this couldn’t be more you!”

If you are hearing the siren call of La Sirèné it is to remind you to “buy beer!”

Let me be your ruler

Girls are often getting their hair and nails “did”, but what about the fellas?  Where do they go when they need a spit and polish?

Hand the man a scotch.

I’ll tell you where…..

Dudes can kick back with a beer whilst they wait for their turn for a choice beard trim, rockin haircut and/or switchblade shave (with hot towel of course).

And ladies, I guarantee this is the only time you wish you were a bloke and you didn’t think shaving was a hassle. Feel my grooming envy by dropping in to see these guys.

 Just head North!

Girl Talk

Girls love to talk.  Especially when it’s about a new guy we’ve met and we can’t wait to tell our girlfriend’s.  And one of the first question’s we’ll ask is, “who does he look like?”

Photo of girl by Diane Kitanoski

One particular occasion  I was telling my story and I answered,  “he looks like Monkey Magic.”  And my beautiful young friend, (10 years my junior) said, “Who’s that?”

Lessons learnt;

1. You will always find a character/celebrity to compare someone to

2. The older we get, the more we feel it

3. If you don’t feel it, you’ll be sure to get a reminder

4. The guy may not last, but your girlfriend always will

5. She is still as beautiful as ever (and yes she’s still younger!)

She’s the cheese and I’m the macaroni

Earth angel’s Cupid was spot on when he aimed at this couple There’s no better pairing than the artistic partnership of Rowena Martinich and Geoffrey Carran. Known for their large scale public artworks, it’s your typical love story…..abstract expressionist meets contemporary artist.

Their two painting styles are perfectly combined giving birth to the (now) newlyweds first baby and debut range of Martinich&Carran Homewares. Pieces range from their beautiful handpainted ceramics to their stunning cushions featuring Geoffrey’s incredible cockatoo’s and Rowena’s distinctive fluroscent paintings. You cannot pick up a home/lifestyle magazine without it featuring a story on this highly successful, dynamic duo.

_DZK0325

Their most recent open studio event was part of the Surf Coast Arts Trail, where they opened up their beachside home and studio space to the public.

_DZK0332              _DZK0303If you missed out and are keen to see more, pop into Koskela this Saturday between 2:00-3:30pm for a chance to meet Rowena Martinich, the neon queen herself, at her new solo exhibition “Inamorata.”
